Science Leadership Academy’s boys basketball team lost 90-48 in a five-quarter pre-season scrimmage against Olney Charter High School on Thursday.

They played well, they were just outmatched. SLA boys basketball is only in division E, while Olney Charter High School is division B, which is significantly more competitive.

Despite losing their first scrimmage, they are optimistic about the season.

“In our division, we will do really well,” commented Senior Captain Andrew Chalfan. “This is a playoff year.”

Students Run Philly Style Team SLA after The Blue Cross Broad Street Run

This Sunday is the Philadelphia Marathon and Half Marathon where 16,000 people will be running the course- and finally we will both be running them respectively.

For the last nine months, our running mentors Margy Wilcox and SLA’s ILP Coordinator Jeremy Spry have trained us to be the best we can be.

Running makes you feel good about yourself, and you feel so accomplished after a run. Speaking for most of the team, we can say that many of us would be nowhere near ready for this race if Margy and Jeremy hadn’t pushed us to achieve our goals.

Yesterday, November 15th after practice Jeremy came to us with bad news. Principal Lehmann’s father passed away. What’s more, the funeral is on Sunday– the same day as the marathon.

As a community, we are all affected by and supportive of each others’ hard times that we have to endure. This translated into Jeremy instead running the first 13.1 miles and SLA teachers including Mr. Latimer and Ms. Thompson have stepped up to accompany us for the second leg.

Jenn:

With SLA’s Students Run Philly Style team, I have trained since March to prepare myself to run 26.2 miles. That’s not just running the miles- it’s convincing myself that I’m not crazy for doing this.

Everyone has the ability to run, but committing to training is where the challenge lies.

I joined the team with the intention of just getting healthy and trying out running as a hobby. When I heard about the opportunity to run the Marathon, I wasn’t thinking about whether I could or couldn’t do it, only that it would be really hard and it sounded positively crazy.

The motivation to do something like this I can owe mostly to the support of my fellow Students Runners. But the person that has been there through it all, every tough mile, every newbie blunder is SLA’s ILP Coordinator Jeremy Spry. To me, he is my coach, mentor and the person that showed me how awesome running is.

The loss of Mr. Lehmann’s father is absolutely a far greater need than my wish to be running alongside Jeremy.

Even though I would love to have my coach cross the finish line with me, the team and I want him to be there for Mr. Lehmann and his family. We understand just how important it is. I know that he couldn’t be prouder of all the things we’ve accomplished this year– many of us never having run before.

This speaks to running and life in many ways. We all must run on regardless of what trials come along.

On Sunday we’ll all cross the finish line knowing that day, we all did what we were supposed to do.

Isabela:

This Sunday, I’m running the Half-Marathon.

I joined students run as a sophomore with a previous past of no sports since middle school. I was nervous to join because I was not active at all and I didn’t know if I would be good enough. I had heard about the team and how much they ran and trained. I was not a runner, and could barely run a mile the first few practices.

Jeremy would run with me and push me to finish those first miles. I remember on my first three mile runs I’d begin to say “I can’t do this. I need to walk” and Jeremy would say “Yes, you can.” It’s a huge commitment, but Margy and Jeremy are very dedicated to helping us succeed. They taught me running techniques and helped me finish the long runs I never thought I’d be able to finish.

Jeremy sounded pretty torn about how he would only be running the first half of the marathon with us and then he would have to leave to go to the funeral. But the team is a very strong community so we understood.

“I really wish I could be in two places at once,” He told us. “I love you all and I want to each and every one of you to cross that finish line.”

We all thank him for being such an amazing coach, and plan to make him proud at the race on Sunday.

A Strong Finish for Cross Country

SLA Cross Country Team

By Nomi Martin-Brouilett

Staff Writer

The SLA Cross Country team just finished one of its best seasons, so far. Students Wynn Geary, Matt Ferry, Serena Shoeman, Katherine Hunt, and Desmond O’Donovan participated in the Statewide races.

“I’m really excited that 18 runners had a strong finish to the end of the season, almost every runner yesterday set a Personal Record” says Cross Country Coach Stephanie Dunda.

To compensate for the loss of last year’s seniors, many hard-working freshman like Desmond O’Donovan, the Bells sisters, Amelia Stuart, Tenzin Shemi, August Polite, and Kevin Courtney  joined cross country and ran with great enthusiasm.

Senior Matthew Ferry was named the fastest Public School Runner in Philadelphia.

“I really did not think I would even have a chance.” states Ferry, “During my Public Champ race though, I found the strength to push the race, and found myself crossing the finish line in 17:54 with Raheem Henry of Germantown right behind me.”

It’s not always been easy, and the training is rigorous. “On Mondays, we do a tempo run, on Tuesdays we always run hills, Thursday is the race, and Friday is the recovery and stretch day,” says Dunda, “Consistency and attending practice is key for attending race day.”

Also, nutrition is somewhat of a problem among the Cross Country team. “One thing that’s hard for us to help runners with is their nutrition, many runners still make bad food choices especially on race days.” says Dunda. The coaches do their best to encourage healthy eating habits for the team members.

Not only does Cross Country help improve students PRs, but it also helps runners in other aspects of life. “Our goals for the season and for life are to enstill the love of running so that students will be healthy for the rest of their lives” says Dunda.

“I get to know other people in other schools.” says Sophomore Aaron Tang, who is new to the team this year.

Sophomore Peter Ricker and Physics Teacher and Cross Country Coach Rosalind Echols

“Cross Country taught me that you only get out as much as you put in,” says Matt Ferry, “I attribute much of who I am today from what I have learned through running cross country and track.”

Staff Writer

Ending their season with a 10-6 record, the SLA Girls Soccer Team is very satisfied with their new title of District 13 Divisions A public league champions.

“It is hard not to be satisfied with our performance this season.” says History Teacher and Coach Matthew Baird, “I think that they deserve both the credit and honor to be the Single “A” Public League Champions.”

Moving up this year from B division, the team has definitely made their mark and next year looks promising.  Winning against difficult teams like Philadelphia Academy Charter High School (PACHS) and Masterman, team confidence has heightened.

“Not only this year did we move up to A division,” says Senior Defender Heather Campbell, “but this year we are also one of the top teams.” .

Mr. Baird added, “What we know now, however, is what it takes to be successful and [what] we can contribute and add to that tradition.”

Boys Ultimate Team Expands, Prepares for Spring

October 26, 2012 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

By Sara Nesbitt

Staff Writer

The SLA Boys Ultimate Team has just finished their second season with Principal Lehmann as coach.

This year, the team saw a major expansion, with about 30 players joining the fall season.

Team Captains and Juniors Rob Jenkins and Matthew Marshall are confident about how the year will play out. The fall season is mostly a time for training, as the regular game season happens in the spring.

“As the season goes on, we’re improving. The fall is just about getting better.” Marshall said.

The team is now getting used to their 6:30am practices, and conditioning through the hallways before school starts.

“Practices are sleepy, but by 7:30 it gets fun, “ said Jenkins. “Once you get into the habit they are pretty easy to bare with, but if you don’t commit its hard to adjust.”

The latest tournament that took place on Oct. 20th ended in victory. The team won 3 out of their 4 games played.

“Tournaments are a blast, when you have to play 4 games in a day or 7 games in a weekend, thats where the conditioning and the depth really comes through.” Principal and Coach Lehmann said. “Those are really the moments where you see the teams heart come through.”

Lehmann is more than happy with the expanding group.

“I am thrilled with how hard the team is working and the growth of the team.” he said. “I couldn’t be more thrilled with the way Rob and Matt have stepped into their leadership roles.”  Jenkins and Marshall moved up to captain status after the previous captains graduated last year.

“It’s amazing being captain, especially when you come up from the first year learning that the sport existed to the leader of the team.” Jenkins said.

The team is working together for a great spring season, and they are all advocating Ultimate for new players.

“I expect most if not all wins this spring. Everyones going to be getting better.” Marshall said.

Lehmann says, “You can’t help but see the boys and the girls come in from a morning practice sweaty and muddy and smiling. They really had the passion for it, and they are really the natural leaders.”
