Blunt Sports Talk from Mr. Bundy: World’s Fastest Knockout; Lebron James’ Sprite Mix; Michael Vick to Jets; Strickland’s 4 three-pointers in 23 seconds

March 20, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

World’s Fastest Knockout

Well, that was quick. Fun fact, it probably took you longer to read that last sentence than Sam Heron lasted in the Octagon against Mike Garret at WCMMA 14. In only one second (1.13 seconds, to be exact), Gerret delivered a punishing rear leg head kick to Heron’s dome which knocked him out unconscious. The knockout is an MMA record and in case you’re wondering, yes, this is real.

Lebron James’ Sprite Mix

Thirsty? LeBron James has got you covered.

In between leading the Miami Heat to one of the best records in the NBA and trying to keep pace with Kevin Durant in the MVP race, King James also just created his very own Sprite drink. The drink, which is called Sprite 6 Mix by LeBron James, is a mix of Sprite’s traditional lemon-lime flavor along with cherry and orange. It will be available nationwide in the coming months for a limited time.

“I never imagined I would have my own flavor someday,” James said in a statement that was just released. “I’m proud of what we created and I’m excited for my fans to try it.”

So who wants one? Check out the videos below to hear more about LBJ’s new signature drink.

Michael Vick to Jets?

Is Geno Smith going to be the starting quarterback for the Jets next season?

We thought that was the plan. But according to reports out of New York, the Jets are bringing Michael Vick in for a visit on Friday to talk about the possibility of him joining the team for the 2014-15 NFL season. And while it’s just a meeting, Vick is only said to be interested in signing with a team that will allow him to compete for a starting QB position next season. So if things go well and Vick ends up signing with Gang Green, it could be bad news for Smith.

The Raiders and Bills have also reportedly expressed some interest in Vick. So Smith shouldn’t be too worried just yet. But stay tuned. This could get interesting.

With only 28.3 seconds left in the the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship game, the Red Deer College Kings were down by seven points to the Langara College Falcons. You mind as well stick a fork in Red Deer College because they were done, right? Well, no one probably could’ve foreseen the Kings’ Lloyd Strickland going to go off in an effort to bring his team back from the brink by knocking down four 3-pointers in 23 seconds. Unfortunately, even with all of Strickland’s heroics, Red Deer College wasn’t able to complete the comeback. The Falcons were able to hold onto a slim 88-86 win.

Lights Out at SLA!

At 7:55 AM  on March 17th, there was a power outage in the SLA center city building. Not to the surprise of many teachers, the students were ecstatic hoping for an early dismissal. Everyone was sent up to their advisories to wait and hear what would happen next.

At around 8:45 AM all the lights went on and the power returned leaving students disappointedly trudging to their first period classes.

This begs the question though, what happened?

ILP Coordinator Jeremy Spry told SLA Media, “Our power went off and about three hundred other residents’ power also went out. We don’t know the cause of it. Once the power went out we contacted Philly Management who are our landlords and they went to PECO to try and get an answer. We had no real time frame of when the power was going to return so Mr.Lehmann contacted Dennis Creedon who is his boss to ask for guidance. But we are not allowed ever to release students from school without approval from the School District of Philadelphia.”

We also asked a few students what they thought about the black out, here’s some of their responses:

“It was so depressing like you should’ve seen how it was. The light came on and everyone was like “AWWW” and no one said anything. We all just packed up and went to class.” Junior, Khadijah Fofana

Dealing with St. Patty’s Day Isabella Aznar

March 17, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

It’s that time of year again, where some Philadelphians take shelter in their homes, while others roam around pretending they are all Irish. It’s St. Pattys Day.

In a big city, you now that the most annoying holidays can be New Years, St. Pattys Day, and Independence Day. One each one of those days the same thing happens. A good portion of the city is drunk while the others have to deal with all of them.

It’s like a zombie apocalypse of all drunk people. You just can’t avoid them no matter where you do. If you are like SLA students and have to be outside of your home on this day here is a list of what not to do.

1. Don’t stay outside late– They will find you and try to talk with you.

2. Don’t go on major streets– Avoid Broad St. and South St. at all costs!

3. Don’t get distracted on septa- There are a lot of people roaming around with no inhibitions and they could always steal something.

Those are the top three things not to do but the one thing to remember to bring are a pair of headphones. Good luck out there.

PYPM Returns!

It’s that time of year again! The Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement slam league season has begun. The kickoff slam took place at the Franklin Institute on February 21st.

From March 7th until the season’s end in June, the slams will be at the Freedom Theater every friday.

So far SLA Center City has won a round after performing a group poem composed of sophomores Soledad Alfaro, Mali Fenning, and Jasmin Gilliam. The 3 girls wrote a poem together about being sensitive.

https://vimeo.com/89013288

Soledad told SLAMedia “It’s a poem about dealing with your emotions and trying to get people to understand who you are. I am super excited for slam league this year, we’re at the freedom theatre and everyone is so talented. It’s gonna be really rad!”

Rad indeed. Students are often known leave slams with a whole new outlook on their surroundings. The poems that students share with the audience can jump from the topic of hair to gang violence.

An inviting part about the poetry movement is the all around positivity. Being an attendee of multiple slams, it’s not uncommon to see students forget their lines because they’re nervous, or some cry from the overwhelming emotion brought up from what they’re sharing, but they are always immediately lifted back up from the snaps of the crowd,

Sophomore Mali Fenning is enjoying her first year in PYPM. She told SLAMedia “The slams are very lively, fun, and not only will you have fun but you’ll learn a lot about culture.”

More and more of Philadelphia’s youth are finding their voices through poetry.
