Be My Bitter Valentine?

February 14, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

By Staff Writer Isabella Mezzaroba

love_stinks_valentines_day-13239

It’s Valentine’s Day and it always brings with it chocolates, flowers, and bitter feelings. I, for one, definitely do not have a soft spot in my heart for February 14th. Valentine’s Day has never brought me a romantic surprise from a loved one or a secret admirer. In fact, all I usually get out of it is a cheesy Hallmark card from my mom about how I’m such a lovable daughter.

When I was young, I used to think Valentine’s Day was a magical holiday in which people grew mutual feelings for each other at the snap of cupid’s bow. Once, in fourth grade, I thought it’d be a good idea to send my schoolyard crush a valentine from a “secret admirer.” Every year, our school organized a valentine’s sale and sold lollipops with little slips of paper attached with a friendly note written on it. I, in the magical spirit of Valentine’s Day, bought one of these valentines and slipped it into my crush’s school bag when no one was looking. Regardless to say, as 9 year olds, nothing ever came of my romantic gesture. In fact, he was more creeped out than anything.

A number of people take the 14th as a “you day,” myself included, and treat themselves. We splurge on that overpriced Ben & Jerry’s Cinnamon Bun ice cream and have a Netflix marathon. When watching movies like The Notebook, The Vow, When Harry Met Sally, and Crazy Stupid Love it’s almost like we’re purposely making ourselves upset.

Single people tend to view Valentine’s Day as a bitter reminder of their relationship status. When you take the religious origins of Valentine’s day into consideration, this really doesn’t make much sense. Valentine’s Day originated as the feast day of Saint Valentine whom of which had nothing to do with 7 dollar Acme bouquets or Godiva chocolates. He was a martyr and was dubbed the patron saint of couples, lovers, love, happy marriages, and beekeepers. So this 14th stay true to the spirit Saint Valentine and buy your sweetheart a beehive.

Simply stated, our self worth isn’t measured by our relationship status on Valentine’s Day. I’ll admit, it’s depressing when you’re walking home from school on Valentine’s Day and you pass 7 couples who you wish would just get a room. However, single people will make it out of this alive. The advice I give would be to hunker down in your house with pajamas and hershey kisses, waiting for the storm to pass. So be bitter this Valentine’s Day. Be lonely, be angry and by all means, complain. You deserve it. Just remember, at the end of the day, it’s you and only you any day of the year. The only thing that you should be concerned with is your own happiness, which doesn’t depend on a relationship.

On thursday, January 23, 2014, Science Leadership Academy (SLA) along with partners from the Franklin Institute and Dell officially announced a partnership for both computers and learning.

The arrangement will provide the incoming Science Leadership Academy students along with the current ninth grade students, the new Chromebook 11. These are not only a brand-new model of Chromebook, but they are the first Chromebook to be made by the Dell company.

The grant provides 620,000 dollars to SLA from Dell to be used to buy the new machines for these students, but also create what will be called the Center of Excellence for Learning. This new center will be used to showcase the innovative use of technology in the classroom, as well as help other schools follow in SLA’s footsteps.

Science Leadership Academy Principal Chris Lehmann, described the concept of the center as “an everyday Educon.” Educon is an event held each year at SLA where teachers and school officials from all over the world come to SLA to learn about the school’s innovative style of learning. They also come to take lessons from SLA back to their schools so that they can keep growing as a place of learning.

Lehmann said the goal for the Center of Excellence was to “create an environment where the learning is transparent.” Essentially, educators come to SLA to learn the style of learning, and take back the lessons and integrate the ideas into their own teachings, in a new way.

Lehmann also emphasized that the goal for the center was, “Not so [educators] can go back and do exactly what we do, but to take the lessons that we have learned, and make them their own.”

At the official announcement speeches were given by Principal Chris Lehmann, Congressman Chaka Fattah, Dr. William Hite of the Philadelphia School District, Dell Representatives Jon Phillips and Deb Bauer, and finally Franklin Institute CEO Dennis Wint.

All speakers emphasized the importance of this new partnership for education purposes.

Teachers are excited about the change, and are also relieved about the transition.

English and Drama Teacher Matthew Kay said, “Fundraising for laptops each year was an incredible burden for the school each year so the fact that Dell stepped up with this arrangement was a real life saver”

Freshmen do not feel the same way. Most Freshmen that were interviewed expressed worry about the Chromebooks’ lack of features.

When asked if he was excited about the new laptops, freshman Declin Zisser said, “No, Chromebooks are awful. They have nowhere to put disks in and you can’t download anything.”

While some freshmen feel this way, most people at SLA are embracing the change and looking forward to the new laptops.

The Laptops are going to be distributed on February 6th, 2014. It remains to be seen how the freshmen will adjust to the new laptops.

Common App & the College Application Process

February 6, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

The process of applying to college can be extremely stressful, as can be choosing which schools to apply to.

The important thing to remember going into senior year is that everyone has a different experience and a different process. For some it is very easy, for some it’s a challenge, it really depends on what the individual is searching for from life after high school.

Nowadays, the most common method of application is through the online application system, common app.

“Common app is a helpful tool, but I don’t understand why they don’t use more advanced technology like pdfs, they could easily avoid all of the glitches and problems that people have to deal with in the process of applying if they just updated the technology” said Senior, Tyler Creighton.

Senior Taylor Veasey felt differently about the topic.
“The common app is an amazing tool when it works. It saves a lot of time.” She said.

Taylor also applied to a record high of 43 universities this school year.

“I applied to 43 schools because I wanted to have options and flexibility. I know that to some people 43 seems excessive but when you are in a position of financial instability it is a good plan. My family is not able to pay for a college education out of their own pockets and I needed a very generous financial aid package. I received many fee waivers so I thought “Why not?”. I would not advise everyone to apply to so many colleges but, it worked out for me. “ said Taylor.

Taylor’s top school was Vassar college, where she applied early decision and recently found out she got accepted. She will be attending Vassar in the fall.

Blunt Sports Talk from Mr. Bundy: Sochi, Cardinals, and Windmill George

Shaun White out of Slopestyle

Apologies to all Shaun White fans, the career 17-time gold medalist will not be going for 2 more golds at this years winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. White was expected to participate in both slopestyle and halfpipe at the Olympics, however due to a reported wrist injury, as well as questionable slopestyle conditions in Sochi, Shaun has decided to withdraw from slopestyle. Instead he will be focusing all of his time and energy on winning his 3rd consecutive Olympic gold medal in the halfpipe competition.

“After much deliberation with my team, I have made the decision to focus solely on trying to bring home the third straight gold medal in halfpipe for Team USA,” he said in a statement released earlier today. “The difficult decision to forego slopestyle is not one I take lightly as I know how much effort everyone has put into holding the slopestyle event for the first time in Olympic history, a history I had planned on being a part of.”

White also admitted that his wrist is OK, but he does not want to risk re-injuring it and losing out on his other Olympic goals.

“With the practice runs I have taken, even after course modifications and watching fellow athletes get hurt, the potential risk of injury is a bit too much for me to gamble my other Olympic goals on,” he said.

With his best interest in mind, it would be selfish for us to want him to risk injury just to participate in slopestyle. Whether it’s slopestyle or halfpipe, White will be at the Olympics attempting to make history again.

Larry Fitzgerald Restructures Contract with Cardinals

In his 10 year career, Larry Fitzgerald has been amazing for the Arizona Cardinals. He’s one of the few athletes who have spent their entire career with one team and was hoping to continue to do that with the upcoming 2014-15 NFL season. But after rumors of him being traded due to his immense $18 million salary cap for 2014, it didn’t look too good for Fitzgerald and the Cardinals.

Luckily though, things have worked in Fitzgerald’s favor, as he revealed on Twitter yesterday evening.

If the Cardinals planned on doing better than the playoffless season that they had this past year, they knew they would need a loyal, veteran and lucky for them they got to keep that with Fitzgerald.  Depending on the specific numbers and cap rules within the agreement, the Cardinals should be able to improve their team and increase their Championship hopes.

Windmill George

Paul George and the Indiana Pacers are cooking this season, with the best record in the NBA. George has not been simply leading the Pacers to the best record, but has been doing so in spectacular fashion. A lot of people have seen and heard about George’s extreme 360 windmill dunk against the Clippers on January 18th, but George proved that he isn’t done with the crazy dunks, with this dunk from last night’s game with the Atlanta Hawks.

Flapp Review

February 5, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

By Melissa Alvarez Staff Writer

In 2010 it was Rovio Entertainment’s “Angry Birds”, in 2011 it was Imangi Studio’s “Temple Run”, in 2012 it was Omgpop’s “Draw Something”, in 2013 it was King’s “Candy Crush”, and in early 2014 has arrived the game from hell, Flappy Bird.

Flappy Bird if you haven’t already heard, is the #1 app in both the Apple and Android app markets, and honestly, I don’t know why. The object of the game is to keep tapping the screen of your device in order to keep Flappy Bird from falling to his/her very impractical death.

Screen Shot 2014-02-04 at 1.24.07 PM

The challenging part about the game is that Flappy Bird has to fly in between, and we might as well just say it, the stolen warp pipes from Super Mario Bros. without touching them. If you come into contact with just the slightest edge of either pipe, Flappy Bird will die and you will have quit the game with newly found anger issues.

So who created this pixelated monster? Nguyen Ha Dong. He originates from Hanoi, Vietnam and has solely been running his own company, .GEARS studio for 4 years. He himself admitted in an interview that he’s not even sure why his app has suddenly spiked in the game market. He also gave credit to the kids in schools that have, and still are, downloading and sharing his game.

Flappy Bird can be considered fun if you enjoy throwing your phone at walls. It’s simple in the most difficult of ways. If you do choose to download this life consuming app, be my guest. But when you finally make it to a double digit score and are proud of this accomplishment, I think maybe it’s time to start rethinking your life choices.

I think our friend 22amysmc said it best:
