Column: My Race With SEPTA

SEPTA: It can be dirty, crowded, and the buses almost never arrive on time. Some call me crazy, but I’ve always loved bus rides. It’s a perfect time for me to stick in my headphones, ignore the world, and stare dramatically out the window.

There are some days in particular when I really look forward to a bus ride, like after running five miles with Students Run.

It was a Thursday, after practice, I checked the bus schedule on my unreliable SEPTA app. It said that the bus should come at 5:30. I had about five minutes left so I just speed walked to the bus stop on 21st and Arch, which is a one way street. I made it to the corner of the street and saw the bus right in front of me. It was a red light, and since I can’t physically walk through the moving cars to get to the bus, I frantically waved to the bus driver.

He turned his head and looked straight at me. We made eye contact. I felt like that was a strong stranger moment… at least until the the light turned green, and the bus driver sped off before I could even step off the sidewalk.

Well, there goes the happy stranger moment. I’m definitely not going to wait another half hour for the bus, so instead, I chased it. Luckily, the cars were not moving because of the traffic so I took that opportunity to tap on the bus’s door.

The bus driver did not open the door.

He probably just had a late reaction I thought. Then, he pointed ahead implying that I should go to the next bus stop. I couldn’t believe it. I just got rejected by the bus driver!

Although, it wasn’t just the bus driver and I. We had an audience. The people on the bus were all watching what was happening and I was debating: should I race the bus to the next stop, or wait another half hour? My pride doesn’t matter at this moment so 1, 2, 3 — I ran at full speed and so did the bus.

I made it to the bus stop earlier than the bus itself, so I even had time to pull out my transpass.

Bitterness was spread throughout my face as I hopped onto the bus to swipe my card. I took a good look at the bus driver and I felt something else. An angry stranger moment. Wait a minute, his face looks familiar. He was my morning bus driver for at least four times!

At that very moment, I felt betrayed and a little disappointed. Some of the people on the bus even laughed at me. Inside, I was envisioning trying out all of the fighting moves I’ve seen in action movies. I had just enough willpower to decide against those tempting thoughts and just calmly walked past all the smirks on their unfamiliar faces.

I haven’t seen this bus driver for a couple of months, but I still can remember his face clearly.  I’m not sure if he remembers me. Even though I haven’t forgotten what happened, if he drives me again, I will let go and put our past behind us and say a cheery good morning. Maybe we can have that happy stranger moment again.

Column: Alien Transfer Students

Greetings, human meat sacs of Science Leadership Academy! I come in peace and mean you no harm, I am but a newly transferred alien that desires to assimilate into your small but hectic society.

I travel to you from sector Bemlehhet, as a former student in Leibtyr Gihh Hslcoo. It is located beyond sectors of Kuqaerontw and Dyloesontw. My Gihh Hscloo adhered to the strict regulatory protocols enforced by the United Galactic Republic, no rule was never left unmarked! Though the provided nutrition often fell short of them.

While I miss my former sector’s Gihh Hslcoo dearly, I am eager to begin a new planetary rotation here! Though some aspects of your academy make my antennae twitch in curiosity, I mean no offense of-course! Allow me to present my queries as to halt any miscommunications between us before they can manifest!

Desolate 4th Level

During my first 120 hour cycle in your facility, I migrated freely through the lateral transportation pathways during my 65 minute period of Nothingness. I came upon a level that no other human seemed to be entering, was it condemned do to a tetirem invasion? Or perhaps a swarm of otqessumoi has come in from an open port?

My curiosity could hardly be contained, I flattened my lung sacs against my back and pushed opened the door! And discovered…nothing? The walls were covered in a peeling, ashen colored plasma and the air was saturated with floating particles. Though I dared enter no further, I rotated my eyes to spy an ajar port to my right. My talons gripped the floor, rooting me in my position, beyond the port I could view several sections all covered in peeling, ashen plasma. All was quiet, empty.

To communicate the fewest, the entire level made my scales shiver in terror: what use could the Academy have for such a desolate level?

No Migration Alerts

At the end of my very first 65 minute period of Hiesngl, taught by Master Cube, I strained my antennae to catch the vibration of a migration alert. Whilst I detected no vibrations, many human meat sacs appeared to gather their belongings in their holder fabrics and migrated from out the main sector port.

How curious, I remember thinking. Surely Master Cube would scold the human meat sacs for their eagerness to depart from his designated teaching sector. But no! Master Cube himself was also preparing for departure as well! Not desiring to look a olof, I gathered my belongings in my holder fabric and also migrated out the port. Puzzlement ran through my arteries while I migrated to my next designated period. Why hadn’t I picked up a migration alert? Was there a defect in my antennae?

But it wasn’t me! Throughout the 24 hour rotation, human meat sacs continuously gathered their holder fabrics and migrated at random! Does the Academy lack the technology to install an alert system?

Wall Breach on 3rd Level

When I first passed by the massive wall breach, I thought for sure that we were being invaded by scavengers. My lung sacs had expanded to the size of melons of water to alert the entire Academy with a screech! They quickly deflated as I saw human meat sacs calmly filtering through the gaping hole. Why were they migrating with such a low parsecs-to-unit ratio? Did they not gaze upon the massive breach? My defensive formation did cause them to increase their ratios, I suppose they have some brain activity.

Why was I the sole one panicked by a massive breach in a wall? Were there multiple breaches in the Academy that I failed to detect? Were they all from past invasions? I dedicated my next 65 minute period of Nothingness to whether or not this was an anomaly. My final report: it is. Whilst I did locate several miniscule holes in metal holders, ports, dihydrogen monoxide dispensers, and oddly enough ceiling plates, there was no sign of another wall breach of that magnitude.

It has since been sealed by a plating of organic metal, which I suspect is actually a rare substance called “wood”. You human meat sacs really must heighten your defenses, how do you intend to fend of an invasion?

Sky Death Hole

I’ve always thought of you human meat sacs as soft and squishy, my transferring to the Academy only solidified my judgement. You lot have no advantages at all, no scales to hold against intense heat, no rotational eyes to assist in locating threats, no talons to utilize for combat.

Why would a species so soft and fragile construct a giant death hole in their Academy? A member of your kind could fracture half their skeletal unit from a collision with a rutyltfeb! What great archivist generated the idea of putting a hole, that descends one level, in the middle of a congregation sector! And correct, before you inquire, I have observed the partition separating meat sacs from certain demise but I have also observed numerous stands in the area. What if one of the Fresher Men holds true to their nature and acts against logic?

Would it not be more appropriate, in protecting your squishy nature, to replace the death hole with a padded area filled with foam and wrap of bubbles?

I may be from a planet where an odg may chase their organic isopene sphere and one can absorb hydrogen dioxide until they quench their polydipsia, but your customs and cultures will always short circuit my cognitive ability!

Beyoncé Tickets come to SLA

What do you do with 70 Beyoncé tickets?img_8236

This is the question that SLA staff had to ask themselves when they got the news from the School District that these free tickets would be available to seniors.

The teachers were surprised and confused by the news and some felt that there were more effective ways Beyoncé could have supported the school district.

“Free tickets are nice but the school district could have used a financial donation from Beyoncé more,” said Ms. Pahomov.

After school on the 21st of September, the staff held a group conversation to decide on what would be the most effective method to distribute. It was clear to them that the fairest way to distribute the tickets would be to hold a lottery as any other method would involve the judgement of the teachers.

To enter seniors needed to give their name to their advisor and be up to date on paperwork. Approximately 70 seniors entered the lottery. During lunch on Monday, the names of the winning seniors were pulled out of a hat.

While many students were thrilled by the opportunity to see a Beyoncé concert many were more excited about the lucrative financial opportunities.

“I was initially very excited,” said Kia DaSilva. “I like Beyoncé and I wanted to go to the show. I then realized that I had Math class on the day of the show and couldn’t skip so I decided to sell them. Depending on the section I’ll sell my two tickets for between 75 and 150.”

Tickets for the concert were officially being sold from a range of $45 to $280. The tickets were given to winning students who had submitted their permission slip by advisors on Thursday afternoon after advisory.

While for the most part students enjoyed the concert, there were some common complaints.

“I have mixed feelings about it,” said Fatu Castillo. “I got there fairly early and it was cold rainy and all types of wet…for the first half of it Beyonce wasn’t there.”

These weren’t the only complaints. Most of the seats were at the very top of the stadium and not covered from the rain. Many students were angered when security confiscated their umbrellas.

“I was kicking and screaming, I was so angry,” said Kia who coincidentally ended up attending the concert rather than selling her tickets. “I thought they were going to take my big bag of cheetos that I bought specifically for the concert.”

When Beyoncé actually appeared on stage many students thought the concert was worth the rain.

“I felt a lot happier and a lot warmer when Beyonce walked on to the stage,” said Fatu. “[I]t was magical.”

“The box shot fire and fireworks,” said Kia. “She came out of it and there were acrobats. People were crying…She owned the rain…Her producers had all these waterworks going on…She was the rain goddess and everyone was in awe.”

SLA Ultimate Frisbee Catches Morning Practice…Sometimes

It’s 6AM. Where are you?

Most SLA students are still in bed, but for a select few students each fall, they are already on their way to ultimate frisbee practice.

There are benefits to playing this sport and things that can grind people’s gears.

The ultimate frisbee holds practice that are mandatory in the early mornings at 6:50 AM. It’s the only time that can be scheduled that allows them to use a field and that make everyone’s schedule work.

To get insight from how the players actually feel about this tight schedule, they were asked their opinions.

[2016] Destiny Patton shared her view on going to practice stating,

“I mean…kids mostly go to practice, uh, it can be hard to wake up from your bed in the morning.”

Sophomore Bea Gerber shared her view on the quantity of kids that go to practice saying,

“Usually we only have half to three quarters of the team on a good day.”

Just like anything else you have wake up for, it can be hard.  But does it affect the rest of your day to wake up at a time like this and run around outside?

”It’s a good way to start your day off because you have energy,” said Gerber. “But it gets harder during the day because you basically just crash because you’re so tired.”

It is said over and over again that it is hard for the kids to stay focused throughout at the last periods of the day. Not everything students do in school is able to be done at the best of their ability, i the time that they have to wake up at to make it to practice on time.

“On days where I have everything ready, I have wake up at 5:40,” Gerber added. “Waking up that early makes me feel kinda… sad, because I am always tired, but I feel happy about it because, I’m gonna be doing stuff outside with my friends.”

“I know I have friends that arrive to class late, and is it fair to mark them late? After frisbee, theyŕe all hot and sweaty, and they want to get changed. Is 30 minutes enough time to get changed in school, and start their day?” science teacher and coach, Ms. Sessa, said about the attendance. ” I really do, because I let my students out at 7:45, and it shouldn’t take a half an hour to get to school and get changed. You don’t have the most amount of time but I definitely give time and am aware when I let them out.”

All of the kids have a different view on it.  Some believe that time is so limited when you have to get back to school, sign in, walk upstairs, get changed, and start class, acting like you didn’t just work your butt off.

Although frisbee is on a tight schedule, the kids manage to pull through it!

Kickin’ It Without a Coach

Students just came back from a long and amazing summer — but not everybody came back with them. Counselor Zoe Siswick, coach of the SLA Girls Soccer Team, has recently welcomed a new guest in her home. A baby girl named Sofia. As a result, Coach Siswick has been on maternity leave since school started, but returned on October 5th. What has this meant for her team?

While Coach Siswick was on paternity leave, several volunteer coaches stepped up. Coach Mark Johnson who usually coaches boys soccer and track helped out with some practices, and ILP Coordinator Jeremy Spry covered some games as well. Jeremy is not very used to doing serious coaching for teams. He is a coach for students run but he mainly just cheers.

¨My strong suit is cheering not playing . I´m not very good at helping” says interim coach Jeremy Spry. This system was not easy for the players.

¨ I have faith in my team but there was a lot of confusion with there not being a coach,¨ said Sophomore Sharron who is a second year player on the team. She was strongly opinionated on the absence of a full time coach.

“I just felt like she was leaving us and everything for her child and it’s hard because she wasn’t trying to get us a new coach at all ¨.

This is how a lot of the girls on the team feel. Girls Soccer began in August and the girls have tried to lead the team. They did not have one solid coach to step in for Coach Siswick. The Soccer team has tried their best despite their absence of a coach.

The girls have been going through what seems like a huge losing streak lately. They just couldn’t seem to find their stride.

¨Every substitute coach has a contradictory style of teaching and it negatively affects our performance. This happens when they change around our plays and positions so no one is where they should be.¨

The team has had trouble playing as a unit and their love for the game was being challenged. Junior Madison Militello believes a full time coach would have helped improve the girl’s skills.

As of Wednesday October 5th Ms. Siswick is officially back at SLA. She has coached the last 3 games and the girls have come out victorious.

¨I missed my team and my students a lot, but my first priority is my daughter. ¨

Ms. Siswick has a lot on her plate this school year with counseling, coaching and parenting but the women we know and love will definitely pull through and be better than ever.

It´s October now so that means it’s getting colder outside, so sadly the soccer season is coming to an end. There were a lot of strikes against the team this season but they still managed to band together and get a few wins. With all the chaos happening with the team and having a coach again, can they still be victorious in the rest of their season?

¨We were forced to do our best while she wasn’t here and stick to what we do best, play soccer so hopefully we can do even better with her here¨ – Sharron
